You’re better than them.

I keep my distance from Alex through the rest of the school day, which is surprisingly hard considering we have two classes together after lunch. And he’s my partner in my defensive battle class.

Our not talking is just fine with Alex. He doesn’t even seem bothered by the fact that I haven’t spoken a word to him and he doesn’t speak either. It drives me so crazy that I almost break my silence, but I have to be strong.

I think about what he said to me, about how I haven’t tried to make any friends here. And he’s right. Though, he’s wrong about his reasons.

I don’t want to get attached to anybody here. The fact is, I still plan on leaving. Even if I do stay here until graduation, I can’t stay in this world. If these people find out the truth about me… it’s too risky.

Even now, my skin tingles and my stomach aches as the magic begs to escape. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this up. Lockdown has to end soon or I’m going to be in a lot of trouble.

But maybe I could try to talk to somebody—just to show Alex that I have tried.

After school, Ava and Hannah are hanging out in Hannah’s dorm. They don’t even bother to invite me today, not that I blame them. I’ve turned them down every day for the last two weeks. I knew they’d eventually stop asking, which is fine. I’m just glad that the two of them have become friends.

Elemental Academy does a good job of keeping elementals separated by their element. It happens naturally, just because a lot of classes are based on elements. But I have more than just air magic, so maybe I should try to befriend people with control of other elements.

I spot a couple of girls sitting at a table in the student lounge. I recognize them as fire elementals. I’ve never seen them hang out with Connel, so maybe I’d have a better chance of becoming friends with them. I should at least introduce myself.

I walk up to them. “Hi, I’m Kamryn.”

Both girls turn to look at me. When they see me, they have matching horrified expressions.

“You’re the girl who landed the plane, right?” The first girl asks, her nose wrinkled in disgust.

I swallow hard. “Uh, yeah. That was me.”

The second girl narrows her eyes. “It should’ve taken twenty of our strongest air elementals to do that. How did you do it by yourself?”

“Because she’s a freak,” the first girl says.

The two girls laugh.

I clear my throat. “It’s not that big of a deal, really.”

“Not a big deal?” The first girl’s eyes widen. “You landed a plane that probably weighed over one hundred and fifty thousand pounds by yourself and you say it’s not a big deal? You shouldn’t even be allowed to live.”

Her words make me hesitate.

Not allowed to live?

The second girl nods in agreement. “It’s only a matter of time before the council decides to get rid of you.
